A Four Letter Word Worth Repeating
Call him an over-achiever. Not only did Casper Andreas co-writer, direct, and produce one of the more-popular gay films of this season, but he’s also self-distributing its United States release.
The
new darling of the gay film festival circuit, A Four Letter Word is a
healthy mix of Queer as Folk and Sex and the City
sensibilities. Party boys, monogamists, addicts and activists all collide
as the new film hits Texas theatres on May 23rd in Austin and May 30th in
Dallas.
SHOUT Magazine asked Andreas (left) and co-writer and A Four Letter Word star Jesse Archer (right) to discuss the film and what impact they hope it will achieve.
Casper: Hi Jesse! How are you? Are you excited about A Four Letter Word opening in Texas theaters this spring? Jesse: Yes very! How did you manage it all? Casper: How I managed our theatrical release? Self-distribution is kind of like making a film in the first place. You make the decision and don’t stop until it’s done. Jesse: I think A Four Letter Word opening this spring will really encourage people to host their own slutty after-parties. Do you think groups like sexual compulsives anonymous will see increased membership? Casper: Maybe! It's good that we’re teaching people with this film that those kind of support groups exist. Even though we make fun of them! Watching you as Luke will probably make some people want to go out and be slutty as well. And others to want to go into sexual rehab. What is your take on that? How much slutty is appropriate? Jesse: The sexual compulsives scene is one of my favorites! I think being slutty can be fun, if that's how you relate. Lots of people think it's wrong, but then again, I know people who fall in love too easily, and too often. Maybe they should go into rehab? Sometimes therapy can be the real addiction, and I think that's part of what our film has to say. Casper: I'm glad you say that we are trying to say something with the film because I remember we worked so hard on finding that balance in the script. To make it really entertaining but at the same time not have it be all fluff. What are some of your other favorite scenes in the film? Jesse: I like the banter in the sex shop between Zeke the gay activist, and Luke the party boy. It was exciting stuff because you essentially have two people who totally disagree, but I think they realize they are just two different sides of the same coin. I also like the ending because it's not Hollywood. Plus, it's really a thrill for me to be able to work on a film that is made by, for and about gays. Casper: Agreed! We have three openly gay actors in leading roles – I don't think any other film can claim that! And many, many gay actors in supporting roles. Plus a gay director, gay producers, and a lesbian editor. A very gay film indeed!
